The Argentinian racehorse story was first mentioned by Emma Bull on the Shadow Unit Forum as an example of the usefulness of the Shadow Unit Wiki:

Then someday, when you want a definitive answer on who first mentioned the Argentinian racehorse story and how many times it's been referred to since, you can look it up! (Topic: "New toy," Reply #4 on: June 13, 2008, 05:40:26 PM)

The Argentinian racehorse story (originally called the Argentine racehorse story and then mysteriously changed) was first mentioned in the comments of a post on Chaz's livejournal on 11/6/07. [1]. It appeared later, on 3/7/08, in a thread on Daphne's livejournal [2] to which Sol replied (simultaneously denying there was any such story and confirming the story's existence).

Elizabeth Bear implied that there would have been a "bit about the Argentinian race horse" in episode 2x01, "Lucky Day", had they not taken it out (along with all the funny bits). [3]

The Argentinian racehorse story is an example of Todd's Tall Tales.

The first canonical reference to the Argentinian racehorse occurred in Act II of episode 3x07 "Ligature":

"What, you never dove in a dumpster before? When I was after the Argentinian racehorse, it was stable middens. Which are actually less horrible in a lot of ways." [4]
