Biography
Hafidha Gates is the adopted daughter of white, rich, hippy parents [3] Gary and Angelique Gates [4]. Her birth name is Jacquelynne Destiny Carroll. Her birth parents, Monroe and Letisha Carroll, along with her older brother Martin, were all murdered on July 14, 1977. Her adoption records were sealed, and every electronic record of her birth family and adoption "has been scrubbed out of existence. Utterly wiped." [5]
She graduated from college at the age of 19 and became a software developer. When her firm was bought out, she decided to give her talents to the government, eventually ending up in the Secret Service.
At the time she converted, she was happy in her job and had a fiancé. When she became a beta, however, her fiancé left her and her employers doubted her fitness for duty. Eventually, she transferred to the WTF.
Hafidha's crack is a matter of some controversy; some believe that it was the "drastic illness" mentioned in her agent bio, while others believe that that is a reference to the Anomaly itself. Unsurprisingly, the Powers That Be are unforthcoming.
During the events of Knock on Coffins she started displaying external manifestations [6] in the form of the ability to manipulate computer equipment and generate an internet signal without physical contact or connectivity. The team has termed this a second-stage beta but as she still seems to be sane and in control of her actions, she is not considered a threat in the unsub sense.
Her closest friendships on the team are with Chaz Villette and Daphne Worth, and the three often go drinking, attend concerts, and play practical jokes together. She has dated a series of boys; she was seriously dating Erik "Notaboy" Holt prior to his death.
Hafidha and fellow agent Chaz Villette are the only two betas known to the ACTF.
She and Chaz, being good friends and having higher than average dietary requirements, argue over who gets the last doughnut at the staff meeting each week.
She is a fan of the CBS television show Criminal Minds[7], and has commented on some of the recaps posted by PTB Elizabeth Bear in her LiveJournal. [8]
We do not know exactly where she lives; however, we know that it is "half an hour closer" to Pimlico Racetrack than is Chaz's apartment in Arlington, Virginia. [9] (Pimlico, in Baltimore, Maryland, was the site of the 2008 Virgin Mobile Festival, which Chaz and Hafidha attended).
She is a certified small arms instructor.
Betanalysis
Crack: Her initial crack appears to be the death of her birth family. [10]
Manifestation:
- Hafidha has "perfect pitch" for computers. This enables her to use them expertly, to get a 'feel' for new systems and programs, and to use her already-expert skills to additional effect.
- Hafidha can detect Anomaly-based influence on computer files. This works only if an Anomaly-based ability was somehow involved in the creation/update of the file.
- Since her manifestation as a "second stage" Beta, Hafidha has been able to control computers without touching them (only demonstrated at short range) and maintain a wireless internet connection when there was no service available.

Brady nodded. "Hafidha says hers is like having perfect pitch for computers. And she can spot gamma activity when it's related to something she's got on the screen." He shifted his feet and frowned. "She says things display in colors, and audio files get flakey. Don't ask me. I have no idea."

November 2008 Hospital Visit
On November 17, 2008, Hafidha made a "locked/work" LiveJournal entry [11] telling her co-workers that she had "to go to the hospital now." She did not explicitly state the reason, although presumably she herself was not ill (she went out to the 9:30 Club the next day with Chaz [12]). Whatever it was involved the "worst phonecall ever" [13].
Speculation on the message boards was that the hospitalized person was most likely Erik "Notaboy" Holt. [14] This was later confirmed in episode 2x05 "Wind-Up Boogeyman", which opened with Erik's funeral.
Incarceration in Idlewood
After shooting unsubs Simon Talliwell (in episode 2x08 "Not Alone") and Felicity Tabor (in episode 3x01 The Unicorn Evils), Hafidha was sent to Idlewood.
Theories
The only theory currently being debated about Hafidha is that she was pregnant at the time of her initial conversion.
Attitudes towards Team Members
Hafidha tends to class Madeline Frost with the Boogeyman and the Grinch, according to Knock on Coffins[15]. Her speed-dial code for Frost is 666.
Gear
Hafidha carries a GLOCK, [16] model 22 or 23.
