Biography

Nicolette Lau was born in Los Angeles, to an Air Force family [2], although one aunt worked as a stage magician's assistant ("Exotic Inscrutable Oriental Assistant") [3]. She has three brothers (one of them named Tim). It's probable that her mother preferred her brothers to her, and that her relationship with her family is strained [4]. Her father and all three of her brothers were in the Air Force; however, Lau does not answer Melinda Grossman's question about whether or not they are still alive. [5] She majored in communications and minored in psychology in college [6].

She was a classmate of Maria Gometz, who grew up next door to her and with whom she has remained friends.

A comic depicting her as a child indicates she was inclined to rescue the helpless at an early age.

Lau has been married at least once, to childhood friend Richard Collier, and although they divorced, she has remained friends with him and his sister Dana [7].

She is vegetarian, although she doesn't object "to sitting at table with meat eaters" [8].

She is referred to by her coworkers as Wonder Woman. She refers to herself as "bulletproof"[9][10][11]

Theories

Several fans theorized that Lau is a victim of incest or sexual abuse, or is close to someone who is, based on her rather dramatic internal reaction to Madelyn Cavanaugh's circumstances in 1x05, "Ballistic" and her presumed strained relations with her family. This theory was confirmed in the post-Season One hiatus DVD Extra "Two-handed Grip", where Lau told Hafidha Gates about Dana's being abused by her father.
