Biography
Stephen Reyes is from Chicago, the son of musicians. His relationship with his father was distant, due to his father's performance schedule. He was raised Catholic, but has become lapsed[4]. While Reyes was a junior associate professor, "a laurel-wreathed elder statesman of the field" stole some of his research; that betrayal drove Reyes out of academia and into the FBI.
Originally a member of the BAU proper, he founded Shadow Unit with Esther Falkner and Solomon Todd to deal with abnormal cases.
He also keeps ties to the medical establishment, such as Johns Hopkins Medical Center, as he is old friends with doctors Amrita Srinivasan and Madeline Frost. His relationship with Dr. Srinivasan may be a romantic one. [5]
He is officially the Agent In Charge of the ACTF, although if the FBI officially acknowledged it as a Unit, he'd be Unit Chief.
In the DVD extra "Tactics", Reyes tries to convince BAU Unit Chief Victor Celentano that the public needs more information about the Anomaly. Celentano reminds him of the costs already being expended - not just on the ACTF itself, but on doctors like Kay Baylor, Casey Ramachandran and Doctor Allison; other specialists like Madeline Frost, Amrita Srinivasan and Rupert Beale; the entire Idlewood complex; plus other support staff and consultants. The "people who control the purse strings" are convinced that public knowledge of the Anomaly would lead to panic and lynchings.
In "Cuckoo" we learn that his full name is Esteban Santiago Miguel Domingo Reyes Fomosa y Ibarra and that he was born in 1958. In the message board thread Dispatches from Esteban Reyes's Birthday Party, we learn that his birthday is March 9.
Relationships
Reyes has been married and divorced three times [6]:
- Reyes married his first wife, Clara, while he was still in academia. When he joined the FBI, his marriage to Clara did not survive the transition. [7]
- His second wife was Dr. Kay Baylor. [8]
His current girlfriend is Delphine White. [10]
